“Your card has been declined” is the card-form error on the ChatGPT checkout: you typed the card into the payment form, and the charge came back refused. It is the wording of Stripe, the processor behind the checkout, and it covers many different reasons at once. This guide is about the card itself: which card types users report as declined, what Stripe's decline codes say, and why paying for several accounts with one card is a bad idea. If you saw “Payment was not approved” instead, start with our “Payment was not approved” guide, which covers bank settings, 3D Secure and local methods such as UPI or Pix.

What Stripe's decline wording hides

Stripe gives merchants a decline code for every refused payment, but the person paying sees a short sentence. The codes behind a plain “declined” message include:

  • generic_decline: “The card was declined for an unknown reason or Stripe Radar or Adaptive Acceptance blocked the payment.” The most common one, and it can mean either your bank or the merchant's fraud rules.
  • insufficient_funds: “The card has insufficient funds to complete the purchase.” On prepaid and debit cards, a currency conversion fee can push a $20 charge just over the balance.
  • authentication_required: “The card was declined because the transaction requires authentication such as 3D Secure”.
  • fraudulent, stolen_card, lost_card, merchant_blacklist: Stripe tells merchants to show these as a generic decline, so you never see them by name.

A different sentence, “Your card does not support this type of purchase,” comes from Stripe's card_not_supported code and has its own causes; see our guide to that message.

What to try

  1. Read the decline in your bank app. If the bank shows a refused transaction from OpenAI, the bank blocked it, and only the bank can lift the block. If the bank shows nothing, the refusal most likely happened at the processor.
  2. Switch from prepaid or virtual to a bank-issued card. A credit card from a regular bank is the type users report least trouble with.
  3. Check the balance with fees. On debit and prepaid cards, leave room for currency conversion and any foreign transaction fee.
  4. Use the card's own country. Billing address and card country should match each other and the country you actually use ChatGPT from. Don't use a VPN to make them match: OpenAI says paying with a method from an unsupported country, or using ChatGPT from one, can get an account blocked.
  5. Stop retrying after two attempts. Repeated declines on the same card can trigger more fraud rules. Wait, call the bank, then try once more.
  6. Look for a local method or ChatGPT Go. The list of local payment options in our other guide applies here too.

When no card of yours works: we pay with a U.S. card

Paidrelay pays ChatGPT on your own account. You copy the checkout link from the ChatGPT upgrade page and send it with your order; our person in the U.S. pays it with a U.S. card. You don't give us your password.

Because of the shared-card reports above, we keep the number of accounts each of our cards pays for small, rather than putting one card on many accounts. That lowers the risk; it does not remove it, and OpenAI decides what happens to any account.

Total for ChatGPT Plus, one month: $23.00. For ChatGPT Pro, one month: $230.00. That is the plan price plus our 15% fee, paid in crypto. Each renewal is a new order, and our card stays on your subscription until you change it. Delivery is usually within 2 hours of payment confirmation, between 09:00 and 21:00 UTC, and at most 24 hours. If we can't complete the payment for your plan, we refund the full amount you paid, in the same coin, minus only the network fee of the refund transfer. We don't sell API credits. Questions

Why does ChatGPT decline my prepaid card?

OpenAI has not published a rule for ChatGPT subscriptions, but forum users report prepaid Mastercards, Wirex cards and gift Visa cards being declined. Stripe lets merchants block cards by funding type, and OpenAI says prepaid cards cannot be used to buy API credits.

Can one card pay for several ChatGPT Plus accounts?

It can be charged, but forum users report accounts being deactivated after several were paid with one shared card. Use your own card for your own account.

Is Your card has been declined the same as Payment was not approved?

Both are general refusals and the free fixes overlap. The card-form message usually points to the card itself, such as its type, balance or fraud rules, so switching to a bank-issued credit card is the first thing to try.

Which card do you use to pay my ChatGPT plan?

A U.S. card held by our person in the U.S. Our card stays on your subscription until you change it, and each renewal is a new order.
